Garmin GPS for Backpacking Trips Adds a Measure of Safety |

About 10 days ago I ordered this Garmin GPS navigator for my husband's Valentine's Day gift and I know he will just flip out when he sees it. We love to hike and go backpacking, and this unit was designed for people like us. One of his favorite kinds of backpacking is to go cross country and staying off the trails. We live in the Sonoran desert and it is actually quite easy to get lost in the wilderness here. There are so many mountains and canyons that look alike from a distance, but of course, no two are alike, and getting back to where we parked the car can be a serious challenge after a few days without a trail. This Garmin GPS unit will assure us that we know exactly where we are all the time when we bring this along.
The first time he suggested that we go hiking off the trail was many years ago when we were younger and could cover at least 10 miles a day with our loaded backpacks. Those days are long gone, but he still enjoys exploring new country so I know he will not let this Garmin GPS unit out of his sight when we are hiking or backpacking. We have about two months left for our hiking season on the desert floor, and after it's too hot here, we'll be able to drive a couple of hours to the high country and there are hundreds of thousands of acres to explore up there, too.
I found the Garmin Colorado 400i Portable Navigator online at Save Cash Time at www.savecashtime.com/, a great site for all kinds of electronics that we have come to depend on daily for entertainment and even practical purposes, like knowing exactly where we are when we're out hiking. I don't know how to use a Garmin GPS, but I am sure that I'll learn quickly once I give this to my husband on Sunday. He'll probably have the Garmin GPS figured out in no time and I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to go on a hike right after he opens it. I'll drive so he can get it figured out before we hit the trail.
In fact, I'm going to give him the Garmin GPS on Saturday night so we can charge the battery and hit the trail early Sunday morning. The weather is going to be great and we may as well put this Garmin GPS to work as soon as we can. Now when we take pictures on our hikes, we'll be able to know exactly where we were and can put that onto a map instead of just saying, oh, just somewhere out there...
