MP3 Players
My son had ODD and can be very difficult. We've found that if we can stop a breakdown before it happens it's easier than trying to bring him down from a full out loss of temper. Words don’t seem to reach him. One of the things the pre-school noticed that did reach him was music. If we could distract him with music we could avoid a full out loss of control on his part.
We purchased an MP3 jukebox player to take with us so that we always had music available. We spent the time to find the music that he responded to best and loaded MP3 jukebox player. This worked great when we were out, but the one thing we did not have was a set up at home. Sometimes we would not think to use the MP3 player. It was suggested we pick up MP3 players speakers. That way when we were trying to avoid a break down at home we could just use the MP3 players speaker system to get him to listen to the music. It was a good idea. We have found that using the MP3 player speakers does work to bring him down without him even noticing that is what we are trying to do.
